4 months pregnant is Monday, July 4, 2022
Being four months pregnant is a big deal! There are a few milestones you will pass during this time, including the development of your baby and some of your first pregnancy symptoms. Below you’ll find a checklist of things to do as you reach these months. If you’re planning on getting pregnant again, you should start preparing now. You’ll need to be ready to meet your little one, but this will be an exciting time.
Your baby is now producing its own testosterone and estrogen. You might have seen your baby’s genitals on ultrasound images. Your baby is also starting to see the world outside and hearing sounds. There’s even a Chinese Gender Predictor, which can give you a very good idea of the gender of your upcoming baby. Don’t forget to enjoy every moment of your pregnancy and try to enjoy the ride!
Baby’s hearing, feeling, swallowing and sucking reflexes are developing
Eighteen weeks from today, your baby’s brain, spinal cord, and ears are fully developed, and the central nervous system has begun to function. Your baby is now able to move their eyes, make facial expressions, and even recognize sweet and bitter tastes. Your baby also has reflexes for feeling and hearing. As your baby becomes more mobile, you can notice your baby wriggling around and moving its arms and legs.
Sucking is an instinctual activity for babies at this age. They start to do this when they are touched with objects and gradually become conscious. It doesn’t necessarily indicate hunger, but it is a soothing activity. The sucking reflex is also a natural part of the development of the mouth. The baby will develop the hand-to-mouth reflex as early as two to three months of age.
Baby’s digestive system is developing
Your baby’s digestive system continues to develop as she grows. The small intestine folds into loops by the time she reaches 10 weeks of age, creating an enormous surface area for absorbing nutrients. The lining of the intestine begins to develop finger-like projections called villi, increasing the area of the lining. This week, your baby starts to swallow amniotic fluid and make its way through her digestive system. This fluid combines with dead cells in her intestines, forming meconium, her first stool. Bile production may also begin at this point, and her gallbladder is likely to start functioning at 18 weeks of age.
At nine weeks, your baby’s digestive system begins to develop. The digestive system has three layers. The innermost layer is called the endoderm, and it will eventually become your baby’s digestive system. The middle layer, called the mesoderm, develops into the baby’s sex organs, bones, kidneys, and nervous system. The outer layer of the intestines, or exoderm, is known as the ectoderm. It develops into the baby’s skin, hair, and parts of the eyes.
Swelling during pregnancy
Swelling during pregnancy is normal, but there are times when the condition can be concerning. The swelling of the feet may be a sign of a more serious ailment. Preeclampsia is a condition in which blood pressure rises rapidly and organs malfunction. It can be a life-threatening condition, so it’s important to see a doctor if you notice this symptom.
During pregnancy, the body produces about 50 percent more blood and fluids than usual. This extra volume causes swelling, also called edema. Swelling occurs in different areas, including the face, ankles, legs, feet, and hands. The extra fluid is needed to soften the body and prepare the pelvic joints for delivery. Pregnancy-related swelling can lead to pitting edema and other discoloration of the skin. Symptoms of swelling during pregnancy may include headaches that last for a long time or are migraine-like.
